Food fiber is a carbohydrate found in plant foods, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes1234. It has two main components: soluble fiber and insoluble fiber, which have different effects on digestion and health45. Soluble fiber dissolves in water and forms a gel-like substance that slows digestion, balances blood sugar, and lowers cholesterol4. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water and adds bulk to the stool, helping to prevent constipation5.
